Merrol Hyde Magnet School
Merrol Hyde Magnet School (MHMS) is a K-12 school located in Hendersonville, Tennessee. It adheres to the Paideia philosophy and is the only magnet school in Sumner County.
MHMS was established in 2003 on the former campus of Knox Doss Middle School, next to Hendersonville Medical Center. The school is named after Merrol N. Hyde, a local resident and Sumner County Commissioner.
Admission to Merrol Hyde Magnet School requires that one meet a strict selection criteria. Once an application is submitted, the prospective student must take a standardized test and score in at least the 85th percentile.
Acceptance priorities are as follows:
- People who have siblings in the school are accepted first.
- People that have the highest scores will be placed further near the top.
There are waitlists for almost every grade in the school. If at any point during the school year, a student leaves, then the first person on the wait list will be contacted.
Merrol Hyde Magnet School is a traditional academic school with a focus on foreign language. It enrolls approximately 650 students in grades K-12 and utilizes the Paideia philosophy.
The school focuses on preparing graduates, engaging minds and developing character.
Paideia is not a strategy for teaching, but rather a philosophy of educating the whole child. Classrooms therefore are student centered where children encounter fewer teacher-directed lessons and more discovery learning. A wide range of higher order conceptual skills are used to complement, not replace, the traditional basics of reading, writing and computation.
Student education includes project learning, Socratic seminar instruction and intellectual work from the students. The curriculum focuses on the study of literature, fine arts, music, foreign language, technology, science, math and physical health.
The Merrol Hyde Magnet School is a Public university located in Henderson.
