Townsend Harris High School

Townsend Harris High School (THHS) is a public magnet high school for the humanities located in the borough of Queens in New York City. Students and alumni refer to themselves as "Harrisites." Townsend Harris is ranked consistently among the top 100 high schools in the United States.

In the most recent U.S. News and World Report ranking in 2020, THHS comes in as #2 in New York City, #1 in New York State, and #5 in the nation.

THHS is named for Townsend Harris, who besides his diplomatic accomplishments, helped found the Free Academy of the City of New York, which later became City College, and was also a strong proponent of free education. 

Over 10,000 students compete for approximately 270 seats in the freshmen class each year based on middle school grades, standardized test scores and attendance records. Admission is available to all New York City residents in 8th grade and a minimum grade point average of 90 is required of all applicants to be considered for admission.

The mission of Townsend Harris High School is to foster a love of learning, to instill the habit of inquiry and to promote an awareness of beauty in nature and in the arts. THHS exposes its students to multiple perspectives so that they can appreciate various points of view. THHS enables its students to achieve their potential so they become articulate and responsible adults.

The curriculum is rigorous and has an emphasis on the humanities and classics, bolstered by mathematics, science and the integration of current technology.

THHS seeks to graduate talented and motivated students who reflect diversity of New York City, become lifelong learners and make meaningful contributions to the world.
