University High School
University High School, abbreviated as UHS, is an accelerated public high school that is located in Tucson, Arizona. It was originally known as Special Projects High School (SPHS). It is part of the Tucson Unified High School District (TUSD) and its mission statement is to serve as "a special function high school which serves students who are academically focused and intellectually gifted and provides curriculum and social support not offered in the comprehensive high school."
The school shares a centrally located campus with Rincon High School. The mascot is the penguin, which gives the school its reputable colors of black and white. UHS is a public school but entry is based upon a combination of exam scores (CogAT) and 7th and 8th grade GPAS. Entry is highly competitive.
UHS students graduate after taking a minimum of eight Advanced Placement (AP) classes (including AP English, AP US History, AP US Government and Politics, AP Physics, AP Environmental Science, etc.). However, many opt to take additional AP courses, with some students completing as many as 16.
U.S. News and World Report identified UHS as one of the best high schools out of approximately 20,487 schools.
